There are destinations where you can host a wedding, and then there are destinations that can turn a wedding into an entire journey. Madeira belongs firmly in the second category.
With its dramatic landscapes, Atlantic views, remarkable hotels, gastronomy, heritage and culture, the island offers far more than a beautiful backdrop for a ceremony. It lends itself naturally to the idea of a multi-day destination wedding, where the celebration begins long before the vows and continues well beyond the wedding night.
We had the opportunity to experience this side of Madeira during a trip hosted by Visit Madeira and organised and coordinated by WEMA Global. Over several days, we discovered hotels, wedding venues, restaurants and experiences that could become part of a complete wedding itinerary, from the guests’ arrival and welcome dinner to the wedding itself, the following-day lunch and the activities in between.
For couples dreaming of bringing their favourite people together for more than just one day, Madeira offers exactly that possibility.
Where to get married in Madeira
Choosing where to marry in Madeira is, in many ways, about choosing which version of the island you want your guests to experience. There are resorts where everyone can stay together, historic hotels surrounded by lush gardens, properties perched above the ocean and contemporary venues with a completely different aesthetic.
Hyatt Ziva Madeira: a resort made for a wedding week
The Hyatt Ziva Madeira was our home during the trip, giving us the chance not only to stay at the resort, but also to dine there and explore its wedding facilities.
Fully renovated in 2024, the five-star resort is particularly suited to destination weddings because so much of the experience can happen within the same property. Alongside its accommodation, guests can enjoy an All-Inclusive concept, a spa of more than 900 square metres with a thermal area, several swimming pools, gardens, entertainment and an extensive food and beverage offering.
For couples planning a wedding abroad, however, one of its greatest advantages is the possibility of creating several moments of the celebration without constantly moving guests from one location to another. The church within the resort, with its architecture, stained-glass windows and setting, can host the ceremony, followed by a cocktail in the courtyard and a reception in one of the hotel’s dining spaces.
When many or all of the guests are staying at the same resort, the experience naturally becomes more than a wedding day. Breakfasts together, time by the pool, spontaneous drinks and shared dinners become part of the celebration too, turning the stay into a true wedding week.
Belmond Reid’s Palace: Madeira’s timeless glamour
Few hotels are as closely associated with Madeira as Reid’s Palace, a Belmond Hotel. Its historic architecture, subtropical gardens and sweeping Atlantic views make it particularly appealing to couples looking for a classic, elegant and timeless setting.
The hotel offers several possibilities for weddings and private events, including its palm gardens, historic ballroom, Brisa do Mar, the Pool Terrace and a selection of indoor spaces. There are also options for exclusive use of certain areas and hotel takeovers, allowing couples to create a highly private celebration.
This variety makes it possible to design a wedding that moves naturally from one atmosphere to another: an outdoor ceremony, cocktails in the gardens, dinner in a historic room and an evening celebration afterwards. For couples drawn to heritage, tradition and old-world sophistication, Reid’s Palace remains one of the island’s most distinctive addresses.
Casa Velha do Palheiro: a wedding surrounded by nature
For couples whose idea of Madeira is inseparable from its gardens and vegetation, Casa Velha do Palheiro, part of Palheiro Nature Estate and a member of Relais & Châteaux, offers a very different kind of setting.
The property combines elegant interiors with lush gardens, panoramic views and a sense of privacy that feels particularly suited to intimate and refined celebrations. Among the possible event spaces are the Pavilion, the historic chapel, the Palheiro Gardens and the Balancal terrace overlooking Funchal Bay.
What makes the property especially appealing is the possibility of allowing the wedding to unfold naturally across different areas. A ceremony can take place in the chapel or gardens, followed by an outdoor cocktail and a more intimate dinner, with the surrounding landscape remaining part of the experience throughout.
For couples looking for understated elegance, nature and tranquillity rather than excess, this is a particularly beautiful option.
Saccharum: contemporary design overlooking the Atlantic
In Calheta, Saccharum introduces a more contemporary side of Madeira. The resort’s design draws inspiration from the history of sugar-cane production that once defined the area, creating a strong visual identity through its architecture, materials and relationship with the landscape.
Its versatility is also one of its strongest assets for weddings. Galeria 1425 can accommodate up to 100 guests, while the Fly Lounge and Calhau Bar can each welcome up to 200. Sala Canavial can host 150 guests, while Trapiche and Sala Melaço can accommodate around 200. Couples planning a smaller celebration can also consider The Club, for up to 40 guests, or Alambique, designed for a very intimate gathering of 14.
This range makes it possible to adapt the venue not only to the size of the wedding but also to its rhythm and aesthetic, whether the vision includes a ceremony by the ocean, cocktails on a terrace or an intimate dinner in a more private room.
Quinta do Furão: one of the most striking landscapes of the trip
On Madeira’s north coast, Quinta do Furão reveals a greener, wilder and more dramatic side of the island.
Set at the top of a cliff and strongly connected to Madeira’s wine traditions, the property enjoys remarkable views over the Atlantic and the island’s northeastern coastline. It sits approximately 40 minutes from Funchal and around 20 minutes from the airport, making it possible to enjoy a more secluded atmosphere without being completely removed from the island’s main points of access.
The landscape was one of the most memorable of the entire trip. For couples picturing an outdoor ceremony surrounded by nature, sunset drinks above the ocean or simply a stay in a quieter part of Madeira, Quinta do Furão deserves a place on the shortlist.
Where to gather: welcome dinners, rehearsal dinners and lunches with guests
One of the greatest advantages of a destination wedding is the possibility of creating several different moments over the course of a few days. A welcome dinner, a casual lunch, a rehearsal dinner or even a post-wedding gathering can become an opportunity to show guests another side of the island while giving everyone time to connect away from the formality of the wedding itself.
Avista: beginning the celebration overlooking the Atlantic
Avista is the kind of restaurant that can fit very naturally into a destination-wedding itinerary. With its views, atmosphere and gastronomic experience, it can work beautifully for a welcome lunch, a relaxed dinner before the wedding or simply one of the meals shared with guests during their stay.
It also represents something we particularly like about destination weddings: there is no reason for every part of the experience to happen in the same place. Moving guests between carefully chosen locations makes the destination itself part of the celebration, and each meal becomes another opportunity to discover the island.
Oxalis: an intimate dinner at Palheiro Nature Estate
During our stay at Casa Velha do Palheiro, we also had the opportunity to dine at Oxalis, the hotel’s restaurant.
For couples hosting a wedding at the estate, it can naturally become part of the wider celebration, whether for a dinner before the wedding or a more private gathering with close family and friends. It can also work independently as a refined setting for one of the quieter moments of the wedding weekend.
The surrounding nature and atmosphere of Palheiro Nature Estate make it particularly suited to couples who want these smaller occasions to feel considered, elegant and intimate.
AUDAX: introducing Madeira through its cuisine
Another dining experience we discovered was AUDAX, where Madeiran tradition is reinterpreted through a more contemporary culinary approach. The menu brings together land and sea, using local ingredients while combining memory, technique and innovation.
The space itself reflects the same philosophy, with a minimal and intimate atmosphere that keeps the focus on the food and on the experience of sharing it. The wine list places particular emphasis on Madeiran and Portuguese wines, including a pairing composed exclusively of Madeira wines.
For a welcome dinner, this is an especially appealing way of introducing the island to guests through flavour, allowing the destination to be experienced not only through its landscapes but also through its culinary identity.
Fajã dos Padres: lunch between the mountain and the sea
Some experiences feel memorable before you even arrive at the table, and Fajã dos Padres is one of them.
During the trip, we had the pleasure of having lunch here, in a setting tucked between the mountain and the Atlantic.
Within a destination-wedding itinerary, it is easy to imagine it as a relaxed lunch on the day before or after the wedding, particularly for couples who want to offer their guests something less formal and more connected to the landscape.
The journey to the location becomes part of the experience itself, creating the feeling of discovering a hidden corner of Madeira rather than simply arriving at another restaurant.
Nini Design Centre: design, gastronomy and a different side of Funchal
The Nini Design Centre introduces yet another atmosphere to the wedding weekend. With its strong connection to design and its distinctive location, it can be considered for a lunch, dinner or gathering during the celebrations.
It is particularly interesting for couples who want to alternate between Madeira’s historic and natural settings and something more contemporary. That contrast can be very effective throughout a destination wedding, as it allows each part of the itinerary to have its own mood and visual identity.
Experiences to share with your guests
Bringing guests all the way to Madeira and showing them only the hotel and the wedding venue would almost feel like a missed opportunity. The island offers countless ways of turning the days surrounding the wedding into part of the celebration itself.
Some of the experiences we discovered during the trip could easily be incorporated into a guest programme.
Funchal Cable Car: seeing the city from above
The Funchal Cable Car is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to introduce first-time visitors to the city.
As the cable car climbs towards Monte, guests can take in views of Funchal, the mountains and the Atlantic, gaining an immediate sense of the island’s geography.
It is also a very simple activity to incorporate into a group itinerary, as it requires little preparation and can easily be combined with other experiences in the Monte area. A relaxed morning there, for example, can become the perfect programme for the day before the wedding.
Monte Toboggan: a Madeiran tradition with a playful side
Once in Monte, one of Madeira’s most recognisable traditions is waiting: the famous wicker toboggan ride.
The Monte Toboggan Sledge Ride combines history, local tradition and a good dose of fun. During our time in the area, we also visited one of Monte’s iconic churches, making it very easy to create a half-day itinerary around the experience.
It is exactly the kind of activity that works well with a group of wedding guests: informal, genuinely connected to the destination and very likely to generate plenty of photographs, videos and laughter.
Happy Hour Madeira: experiencing the island from the ocean
When celebrating on an island, spending at least a few hours at sea feels almost essential.
With Happy Hour Madeira, we enjoyed a boat trip accompanied by breakfast, discovering the coastline from a completely different perspective.
As part of a destination wedding, a similar experience could take the form of an early-morning sail, a relaxed outing before the wedding or a slower activity on the day after the celebration.
Seeing Madeira from the Atlantic changes the sense of scale entirely, revealing just how dramatic its mountains and cliffs really are.
Bordaterapia by Bordal: discovering a centuries-old tradition
One of the most distinctive experiences of the trip was also one of the most closely connected to Madeira’s cultural identity.
Bordaterapia, created by Bordal, brings traditional Madeira embroidery together with creative tourism, nature and the principles of slow travel.
In small groups, participants learn six traditional embroidery stitches alongside an experienced embroiderer and receive their own kit, including a cotton handkerchief, needle and thread.
The experience can take place in a number of emblematic locations, including Madeira Botanical Garden, Palheiro Gardens, the Sacred Art Museum of Funchal, Fajã dos Padres and Terra Bona in Boaventura.
For international guests in particular, it is a beautiful way to discover a genuine local tradition while also taking home something tangible from the experience.
Food on Foot: discovering Funchal through its flavours
We also explored Funchal through a Food on Foot Tour, using gastronomy as a way of discovering the city.
This type of experience works especially well for destination weddings with guests arriving from different countries or friendship groups. Beyond introducing local flavours and different areas of the city, it creates a relaxed environment in which people naturally talk, walk and get to know one another before the wedding.
Our route also included a stop at Jaket, adding another gastronomic layer to the experience.
And perhaps that is one of the most underrated advantages of a multi-day wedding: by the time the ceremony begins, many of the guests who arrived as strangers already feel part of the same celebration.
One wedding day, several days of memories
After a few days discovering Madeira, it became very easy to picture how a destination wedding on the island could unfold.
Guests might arrive and meet for the first time over a welcome dinner, spend the following morning exploring Funchal or Monte, learn the art of Madeira embroidery, enjoy the spa or head out to sea. The wedding then becomes the centrepiece of the trip rather than its only meaningful moment.
The following morning does not necessarily have to mean suitcases and airport transfers either. There can still be time for brunch, lunch overlooking the Atlantic, a boat trip or simply a few more unhurried hours together.
That is ultimately what makes Madeira so compelling as a destination-wedding location. Couples are not simply choosing where to get married; they are choosing everything that can happen around the wedding too.
The wedding lasts a day and Madeira makes it a journey.
